Here is my submission for the 2017 Millarworld Annual Contest. I’m very proud of it.
Panel One: We’re inside an old-fashioned ice cream parlor. HUCK bends over to hand an ice cream cone to a six-year-old girl with a cast on her arm. The girl’s mother is smiling nearby.
Elsewhere in the shop we see a beautiful woman in a gorgeous dress, wearing big, noise-cancelling headphones (BEAUTIFUL WOMAN). She’s the kind of person that stands out in a crowd, and she really stands out here. She’s sipping a drink through a straw, and looking down at her phone as she walks toward the front door.
It appears as though the BEAUTIFUL WOMAN has forgotten her purse on the floor near the front counter.
Panel Two: HUCK looks down at the purse, noticing that it has been left unattended.
Panel Three: HUCK looks toward the front door of the ice cream parlor, where he sees the BEAUTIFUL WOMAN leaving, he thinks, without her purse.
Panel Four: Close-up of HUCK’s hand grabbing the purse.
Panel Five: We’re now just outside the front door of the ice cream parlor. Determined, HUCK sprints out the front door, holding the purse in one hand.
HUCK startles ZOE, who was on her way into the shop to look for her purse, which she notices HUCK is holding.
Panel One: We’re now on a very quaint street in HUCK’s hometown. There are lots of mom-and-pop shops, and the sidewalks are lined with a few trees and benches. It’s a beautiful, quiet day with very little traffic, and only a couple people from town walking
HUCK hustles down the sidewalk to catch up with the BEAUTIFUL WOMAN, who we see is tossing her drink into a garbage can without looking up from her phone.
In between HUCK and the BEAUTIFUL WOMAN, HUCK’s dog (MICKEY) is tied to a post by his dog-leash. The leash is pulled taut as MICKEY tries to get at a squirrel that’s on the curb.
Panel Two: HUCK is so focused on returning the purse he accidentally kicks MICKEY’s leash, causing it to break away from the post.
Panel Three: HUCK skids to a stop when he sees MICKEY chase the squirrel into the street.
In the lane farthest from HUCK we see HUCK’S BOSS’ big semitrailer truck on a collision course with the animals. Note that both the truck and the person I refer to as “HUCK’S BOSS” appear in the panel I’ve attached as an Annex.
Panel Four: Determined, and with the purse still in his hand, HUCK sprints to catch up with MICKEY. Even though HUCK’S BOSS is doing his best to brake, it looks like a collision with MICKEY is a foregone conclusion.
1. SFX: SKREEEEE
Panel Five: Close-up of HUCK’s hand digging into the bumper of the truck, abruptly stopping the vehicle.
2. SFX: SKREEE–
Panel One: Big panel with a very wide shot of HUCK holding the truck in the air. A couple people from town are watching in awe, but they’re not taking pictures or recording video since they know the importance of keeping HUCK’s abilities a secret. In the background we see that MICKEY is safe, and that he has chased the squirrel into a tree.
Panel Two: While kneeling to put the truck down, HUCK looks down and across the street where he sees the BEAUTIFUL WOMAN (who is still looking down at her phone, oblivious to what is going on around her) heading to her car: a red convertible with the top down.
Panel Three: HUCK takes off running toward the BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. He looks back over his shoulder to give a wave to the people behind him.
Behind HUCK we see HUCK’S BOSS leaning out of the truck’s driver-side window to wave, and in the middle of the street we see MICKEY jumping up to lick ZOE’s face. ZOE again watches HUCK run away with her purse.
Panel One: HUCK’s in mid-air as he leaps over a bench to catch up with the BEAUTIFUL WOMAN.
Panel Two: HUCK lands right behind the BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. She is still so focused on her phone that she doesn’t notice him.
Panel Three: Close-up of HUCK’s hand tapping the BEAUTIFUL WOMAN’s shoulder, stopping her in her tracks.
Panel Four: A big grin appears on HUCK’s face as he hands the purse to the BEAUTIFUL WOMAN, who has turned to face him.
The BEAUTIFUL WOMAN is very surprised. She wasn’t expecting to see a big guy like HUCK when she turned around.
Panel Five: The BEAUTIFUL WOMAN looks down at the purse being handed to her.
HUCK is still smiling.
Panel Six: Same shot as in the previous panel, but now the BEAUTIFUL WOMAN looks up at HUCK, confused as to why he is trying to give her someone else’s purse.
HUCK’s grin disappears. He isn’t sure what’s happening.
Panel One: The BEAUTIFUL WOMAN walks away from HUCK, and toward her car. She looks down at her phone while pressing a button on her key chain to unlock the doors of her car.
HUCK is still awkwardly holding the purse out toward the BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. He is very confused.
1. SFX: be-boop
Panel Two: HUCK looks down and reaches into the purse to grab something. Behind HUCK we see the BEAUTIFUL WOMAN driving away.
Panel Three: We’re in HUCK’s POV. He’s pulled out a wallet, and is holding it up to look inside. Inside he sees ZOE’s picture on a piece of ID.
Panel Four: We’re still in HUCK’s POV, but he’s lowered the wallet. ZOE is standing right in front of him, a playful smirk on her face. She has MICKEY by his leash.
Panel Five: We’re no longer in HUCK’s POV. He looks embarrassed as he gives ZOE the purse in exchange for MICKEY’s leash. HUCK feels bad for almost giving ZOE’s purse away. ZOE thinks it’s a funny situation, so she has a big, bright smile on her face.
Panel Six: HUCK and ZOE smile at each other as they enjoy the humorous little moment they’re sharing. MICKEY sits patiently next to HUCK.
Elsewhere on the street we see a few people from town walking around, carrying on with their day.
